History of the Grade Chart - a) General overview

Go back to chapter ‘The Auditor (1): Auditor Classes through time (May 65 to present)’

Go back Auditor Classes  vs  Grade Chart
 (1965-present)
In the tables where ever possible the actual presentation has been followed. For example in 1983 the Class VI Auditor was adjusted to Class VII Auditor, both however were still presenting the HSS (Hubbard Senior Scientologist). They both therefore remain listed in the same column in the tables.
It is to be noted that the NOTs Auditor moves around a bit.

Go back How the Auditor Classes present themselves on the Grade Chart through time

That what they presented has been shifted through time. This table gives details when these various Classes presented exactly what on respective Grade Chart.
Especially up till the 1970 charts there are 2 specific aspects to being an auditor. You learn to audit others on certain processes as well as you learn to become a Solo Auditor. Both of these are indicated till the 1970 chart on the Training side. On the 1975 chart the Solo Auditing (R6, Clearing Course, OT Sections) had moved to be listed on the Processing side. It remained common that Solo Auditors were very well trained at least up till so about the early ’70s. A so-called PC route had been introduced in 1966. (see chapter following this, “The Auditor (2)”)
Various abbreviations are explained in the addendum following the table.

*  Class VI in May 1965 was at the level of Clear, at this time there was no Clearing Course (Grade VII) yet. It was later found that Clear was on a higher level. Class VII on this chart was referred to as O.T. Processes for Self.
*  Grade V-VA may still be indicated as Power & Power+ on the chart itself from here on out.
*  HRD moved to ‘Routes onto the Bridge’, this is placed directly under the Bridge itself.
*  This is listed on the previous chart as New Class VI Auditor.

Go back Auditor prerequisites compared

Rather interestingly the 1st January 1968 Grade Chart makes mention at the level of ‘OT’ as a prerequisite: “Clear, By invitation only, Good record as Scientologist”.

This is a detailed list (table) which displays Auditors prerequisites (training side of chart) and adequately compares them with the various presentations on the various charts that have been issued through time. Be it noted that it only lists the main Auditor Classes.

The abbreviations of these main Auditor Classes are listed here below:
HRS, Hubbard Recognized Scientologist. A Class 0 auditor.
HTS, Hubbard Trained Scientologist. A Class I auditor.
HCA, Hubbard Certified Auditor. A Class II auditor.
HPA, Hubbard Professional Auditor. A Class III auditor.
HAA, Hubbard Advanced Auditor. A Class IV auditor.
HVA, Hubbard Validated Auditor. A Class V auditor.
HSS, Hubbard Senior Scientologist. A Class VI auditor.
HGA, Hubbard Graduate Auditor. A Class VII auditor.
HSTS, Hubbard Standard Technical Specialist. A Class VIII auditor.
(since 1990 chart: HSST, Hubbard Specialist of Standard Tech)
HATS, Hubbard Advanced Technical Specialist. A Class IX auditor.
Be it noted that some of the numbering of the Classes moved around a bit through the years. At this time the Class V Auditor & Class IX Auditor represent something different.

A few interesting observations can be made from this table:
(1)  One is the moving around of the NOTs Auditor. First placed directly following the Class IV Auditor (Dec 78), then placed following the Class IX Auditor (Dec 80), back to following the Class IV Auditor & NED Auditor (as Class IV NOTs Auditor) (Jan-Mar 82), to finally become the New Class IX Auditor (Nov 83), where it is still at today. This al lead to that the designation of the Class IX Auditor has become a misnomer, because he was not required to have done for example the Class VI course (SHSBC) or the Class VIII course. He does not even has to be trained as a Dianetics Auditor.
(2)  A second observation is that as it appears the Dianetic Auditor is put more and more out of reach. On the early charts you could start on it right away. Later it is moved to be placed after Class IV on the chart (Jan 82), then this Class IV is put as a prerequisite (since Nov 83). Other prerequisites are added as time passes such as Student Hat (Dec 78), Pro TRs course (Dec 80-Nov 83), Method One Word Clearing (Nov 83), Pro Upper Indoc course (1991), and finally the E-Metering course (1995). Thus today it comes to first doing these 5 last named courses and then Class 0, I, II, III & IV. That's a total of 10 courses before you even start on the actual Dianetics course! (of course I do not refer here to ordinary Book One auditing without use of the E-Meter)
This all in spite of:

“The first requisite of any auditor trainee is to find and run secondaries and engrams on a preclear, preferably a fellow student, and to have secondaries and engrams run on self.

Due to the fantastic speed of results today it is not possible for a student to get enough auditing experience using the standard tech of 0 to VI. ...

No auditor will ever be worth very much unless he has come in the right way – through Dianetics. The concept of physical and mental difficulty stemming from a mental image picture was a great discovery and the technology of erasing such pictures as developed must not be lost on our trained Scientologists.”          LRH
(from HCOB 3 Apr 66 “Dianetic Auditing Course”, also printed in ‘Ability 183’, [ca May-Jun 66] “A New Dianetic Auditing Course”)

It was only on the September 1969 chart that the Dianetics course was listed as an actual prerequisite to the Class 0 course. Although the message given by L. Ron Hubbard should remain clear enough. Then considering that suddenly the December 1980 chart listed in its prerequisites for Class 0: “Preferably NED Auditor”, then the message was not entirely lost. Anyway since then then things definitely have turned around. Not to mention that only an adjusted version of the original Dianetics is in use today as New Era Dianetics (NED)

(3)  A third observation is that the 1983 chart introduced excessive listing of prerequisites. It is first at this chart that we suddenly see listed Professional TRs and Method One Word Clearing at each Class. It is in fact rather silly to list such a prerequisite at Class XII! Obviously when Class 0 has these prerequisites there is no need to list it at any Class above it as Class 0 itself is already a prerequisite to these. This excessive listing is dropped again since the 1991 chart.

*  HACS (NOTs)= Hubbard Advanced Courses Specialist, on the 1980-82 charts listed as ACS, since the 1983 charts till today again listed as HACS.
*  HSA (New Class VI) = Hubbard Specialist Auditor (Repairs and Remedies of Cases). This appears first on 1983 chart. Already abandoned since 1985 chart. It is noted that there is some resemblance between this HSA and the original Class V (HVA). For this reason I let them both appear in the same column.
*  The HCIVGA = Hubbard Class IV Graduate Auditor (Scientology Repairs and Case Remedies) may appear to be the very same as the at the previous chart listed HSA (Hubbard Specialist Auditor)

Vocabulary:

     Book One (or Book I):
Refers to ‘Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health’ that functions as ‘A Handbook of Dianetic Therapy’. It was first published in 1950.
     Expanded Dianetics (Ex Dn, XDN):
(1) “its results are freedom from cruel impulses and chronic unwanted conditions and ability to act in an optimum manner without restraint.”;  (2) about the course: “Trains a person to understand and handle irrational behavior in others and chronic unwanted conditions.” (What Is Scientology? (1978), p 10 & 12)
     Method One Word Clearing:
1. by meter in session. A full assessment of many, many subjects is done. The auditor then takes each reading subject and clears the chain back to earlier words and or words in earlier subjects until he gets an F/N*. 2. assess, take the reading items from the best read on down and with E/S (earlier similar) pull each one to F/N. Get each word you find to F/N. There can be many F/Ns per subject. End off with a win on the subject. 3.the action taken to clean up all misunderstoods in every subject one has studied. It is done by a word clearing auditor. The result of a properly done Method One word clearing is the recovery of one's education. Abbr. M1.
Saint Hill Special Briefing Course (SHSBC):
This was a course delivered by L. Ron Hubbard at Saint Hill, England during 1961-66 and comprises of 447 lectures. Its result is a very adept auditor and thorough know-how of Scientology itself. The materials are studied in chronological sequence so as to fully understand the development of the technology. This will make you a Class VI Auditor.
     XDN or Ex Dn:
Short for ‘Expanded Dianetics’.  See at that entry in vocabulary.
