A World out of Communication (WOOC) and the Key to Life (KTL)

Back to Main Index Primary Rundown (PRD) vs Key to Life (KTL)

“Hubbard Key to Life Course.
1990 saw the long-awaited release of the monumental Hubbard Key to Life Course. Years in preparation, the final course materials consist of 13 illustrated books, with a total of 2,200 pages

and almost 4,000 paintings, illustrations and photographs. In less than a year, thousands and thousands of Scientologists have enrolled on this course, and report astonishing, life-changing wins.”
(from brochure: ‘The Bridge 1991; A complete summary of Dianetics & Scientology services & materials’, page 17)

Go back The ‘WOOC’ eval

There was this thing referred to as the ‘World out of Communication’ evaluation.
An old-timer SO* member confided to me: “The WOOC Eval was a very confidential eval that circulated in the SO and was an LRH* Eval and had some serious things to say about the state of civilisation but also of staffs, very bad state. And the solution was Wordclearing, FPRD* and KTL approach.”

‘SO ED* 1808 Int’, 4 Oct 1981 “The Hubbard Key to Life Course” tells:

“The course began with a brilliant eval by LRH, done in March 1979, called the WORLD OUT OF COMM EVAL. This eval addressed Scientology management difficulties, faulty tech results, lowered general educational standards in the culture, the drug scourge (a person or thing regarded as a great affliction) and so on. LRH concluded at the bottom of these difficulties, that the world is out of comm, dangerously and fatally, and this is what we must handle.”     WOOC I/C

This SO ED was published to inform Scientologists and staff about this upcoming release and it gave specifics about how this was going to be done.

“This course is designed to handle the out-of-commness that currently exists in this society. The planet's future depends on its success.”  (from a to be published HCOB* “Handling the Student on the Hubbard key to Life Course” as quoted in SO ED 1808 Int, the HCOB quoted here remains today only available for KTL delivery personnel)

This SO ED from 1981 further tells:

“The Hubbard Key to Life Course will soon be broadly available to Scientology staffs, who will be the first to have the privilege of doing this life-changing course.

The wins and gains of students on the course have been tremendous, and in some cases, truly amazing.

Students on the course routinely arrive at newly-found abilities to understand others and be understood by them, to read and really duplicate, to speak and write clearly and easily and express exactly what they wish. Many of them literally cannot believe they have gained these abilities. Many have handled their lifelong ruins in study and in life.”     WOOC I/C

Now, this sounds awfully similar to what previously had been achieved by the Primary Rundown.

“The Primary Rundown done HONESTLY is quite an adventure in opening up one's Communication Channels with life!”          LRH
(from HCOB 3 Apr 72 “Primary Rundown Note”)

The Grade Chart for 1983 did list the Key to Life and Life Orientation Course as a service. It says: “Done at Scientology Churches and Missions with qualified New World Corps Teams.”. May it be mentioned here though that it was in spite of this not actually available for public, as only staff could enroll on it, this until it was officially released in 1990 to the public.

Go back Key to Life  (KTL) & Life Orientation Course (LOC)

The KTL was officially released on 12 May 1990, although it was prior to that available as a pilot course for staff only during a period of roughly 8½ years. It happens to be that I was one of these students. There was this secrecy factor in regards to this course of action. The course was given in a separate room, only those on this course or delivery personnel were allowed to be in there. At Flag this room as I recall was locked. The Course Supervisor there was Marylene Lizer. An elderly person, Anne Saunders, was helping in the course room. You were even forbidden to speak about this course with other person, excepting people that had done the course or had enrolled on it. This pilot course consisted of 2 parts.
The first part was about clearing up all definitions of the most common little words (conjunctions, articles, prepositions and such), you do this together with a twin (your study partner). The exam for this required you to give no more than 3 incorrect definitions for words, in case you did not pass you had to do the word clearing all over from start. If all was well you proceeded with claytable auditing* (explained later). The second part of the course was about grammar.

The message we received at the time was that L. Ron Hubbard had laid out the basis of this course, other persons then had worked out the details following, as we were told, exact instructions from L. Ron Hubbard. The earliest mention of the KTL would date back to 1979. I also vaguely recall that some attention was given to it in the magazine “The Auditor” (I am not sure though, if you know any details, please tell me!). There exist a variety of HCO PLs* and HCOBs relating to the KTL. The ones noted in the little table below are the only ones that were freely distributed. These references are respectively found in the 1991 release of ‘The Organization Executive Course’* and the ‘The Technical Bulletins of Dianetics and Scientology’ volumes.

  HCO PL or HCOB date
  Title
Released
HCO PL 16 Jul 79 Issue I  “Hubbard Key to Life Course High Crime”  11 April 1990
HCO PL 16 Jul 79 Issue II  “Delivering the Hubbard Key to Life Course; The Chicken and Egg Theory” 11 April 1990
HCO PL 23 Aug 79 Issue III  “Hubbard Key to Life Course Routing Forms” 11 April 1990
HCO PL 18 Dec 79  “Enrollment on the Hubbard Key to Life Course” 12 April 1990
HCOB 12 Apr 90  (Taken from an LRH issue for Hubbard Key to Life Course Supervisors)  “Clay Table; Definition of Terms” 12 April 1990

All the HCO PLs noted above have the notification on them that they also had been released under the HCOB issue-type format, they would say “Also issued as an HCOB, same date.”. But they are not as such found in ‘The Technical Bulletins of Dianetics and Scientology’ volumes. It appears though that the first HCO PL listed does exist as an HCOB, but as an original mimeo print-off* only, whereas the remaining 3 remain undistributed.

Then we had the series of references, Hubbard KTL Course Supervisor Series, which were only for use by KTL delivery personnel, which means they were carefully kept under lock and key. There exist also a series of references for its follow-up course Life Orientation Course (LOC), which are assumed also only for use by LOC delivery personnel. The bulk of these references give the indication to have been written from 18 Jun 1979 to 10 Feb 1980, only to be first released during 11-17 Apr & 29 Oct 1990. Some of them do carry a 1990 HCOB date, which may here indicate they had been compiled at this later date and are not deriving from the 1979-80 time span. A full listing of these references and the data that I have about them is found at the link provided here below.

The Scientology periodical ‘KSW News 31’, [ca Mar] 1990 was dedicated to the official release of the KTL course. Not so much reference material from L. Ron Hubbard is actually found relating to the KTL. The information has been going around that there would have existed a variety of so-called advices that were supposedly written by L. Ron Hubbard that are given the year 1979. The KSW News article only gives us some general information. And only page 2 tells little about its background history, the remaining 10 pages for the larger part tell about how the artwork came about. On the front page of this issue of KSW News we find the following quotation attributed to L. Ron Hubbard:

“If one recovered his own beingness and then learned to absorb knowledge, all life is open to him.

That is why it is the Key to Life Course.”          LRH

On page 2 of the KSW News article it says:

“The product of the Hubbard Key to Life Course is vitally important to the future of every Scientologist, Scientology as a whole and the entire society. It is: ‘A Scientologist who is in communication because he can express himself easily and clearly both verbally and in writing and can fully understand the communication he receives from others.’”

Here you can read what it says about Key to Life on the official website (external link) (last checked: 19 Sept 2019). There was also a follow up course to the Key to Life, this was the Life Orientation course (LOC). You can read what the Church of Scientology says about that course here (external link) (last checked: 19 Sept 2019).

Some things that I have never understood is that if this course was so vital, then (1) why has there been such a delay (8½ years) prior to releasing it to the public?; and (2) why is this course so very expensive?
Would it be financially more affordable, more people would be able to complete the course in a shorter period of time. And then, the KTL is estimate to only take 2 to 3 weeks to complete, the LOC in about 1 week. As it appears much time and effort was spent on the artwork of the illustrations, where the pilot version only had some simple black and white drawings. But how significant was this coloured artwork for the course itself?
One argument for the high price for this course was made in regards to the claytable auditing done on this course. Basically it consisted of no more than a couple of large claydemos. I still don't understand why it was called auditing, it was more like the clay demos you do on for example the Professional TR course. But I remember it was sort of interesting to do them. HCOB 12 Apr 90 “Clay Table; Definition of Terms” aims to explain this. In the end however in regards to the KTL it becomes a bit more of a personal matter, as you show in clay how you perceive something.

Go back Modification in regards to the Primary Rundown after the release of KTL

After the release of the KTL some modifications were implemented in regards to the PRD. They were laid out in detail in HCOB 24 Apr 91“Modification of the Primary Rundown”.It reads:

“Many have attained Superliteracy since the development of the Primary Rundown. But with the release of the Hubbard Key to Life Course and the Hubbard Life Orientation Course a major modification is now possible in the Primary Rundown which makes it faster to do and improves its results.

Therefore the following requirements are established:

The Hubbard Key to Life Course is a mandatory prerequisite to the Primary Rundown, ... .

The Hubbard Life Orientation Course is a mandatory prerequisite to the Primary Rundown, ... .”

I also like to draw attention to the date of this HCOB. It only says 24 April 1991. There is no referencing to even an advice from L. Ron Hubbard found anywhere in this reference. Considering that L. Ron Hubbard would have dropped his body in 1986, where then is the source of this HCOB to be found? Does this mean that it is compiled in 1991 by someone else? We do remember that the KTL HCO PLs & HCOBs earlier listed in this chapter were written in 1979, but were not released until 1990. It does say at the bottom: Assisted by LRH Technical Research and Compilations”. Per the rules established by HCOB 24 Jan 77 “Tech Correction Round-up” the assistant would denote the author.

Go back Primary Rundown  vs  Key to Life  (or  KTL replacing the PRD?)

We have seen these similarities between the 2 course of actions, supposedly they would be addressing and handling similar situations. But has there been the intent to actually replace the original Primary Rundown with the Key to Life solution? The fact is that since so about 1979, according to what I have been able to confirm so far, the Primary Rundown had become more and more difficult to sign up for the service as time progressed. This would then be at about the same time since a first mention was made about some Key to Life course. Then, was this a coincidence?
Another such a coincidence would be that at least since November 1989 the Primary Rundown does not appear on any donation lists anymore and therefore it would appear that it was not available as an actual service that could be taken. Then since July 1990 we see the Key to Life and Life Orientation Course appear on the donation lists. These dates are fairly close to each other. Another donation list from November 1991 does list the Primary Rundown again, not directly as a service but as ‘To be announced’. Till this day it still has not been ‘announced’!

Various published notices regarding the Primary Rundown and the Key to Life:

 1990 Grade Chart
(Primary Rundown is listed as if available as a service)
Brochure: ‘The Bridge 1991; A complete summary of Dianetics & Scientology services & materials’ (56 pages)  1991 Grade Chart
(Primary Rundown is listed as if available as a service)
1995 Grade Chart (also 1998 & 2002 copyrighted Grade Charts)
(Primary Rundown listed as “(when released)”)
PRD:  “Someone who has the ability to comfortably and quickly take data from a page and be able at once to apply it.”
KTL:  “A Scientologist who is in communication because he can express himself easily and clearly both verbally and in writing and he can fully understand the communication he receives from others.”
PRD:  No mention anywhere of the Primary Rundown.
KTL:  “Teaches someone to become a literate Scientologist who can express himself easily and clearly, both verbally and in writing and can fully understand the communication he receives from others.” (page 9)
KTL:  “What is the KEY TO LIFE? Well, it's a 30 individual steps, a combination of study and auditing action, which address the rockbottom basics of beingness, communication and understanding. They put a person in communication with life, able to absorb knowledge.” (page 17)
PRD:  “A superliterate, someone who has the ability to comfortably and quickly take data from a page and be able at once to apply it.”
KTL:  (same text as on 1990 Grade Chart)
PRD:  (same text as on 1991 Grade Chart)
KTL:  (same text as on 1990 & 1991 Grade Chart)

Noteworthy is that ‘The Bridge 1991’ brochure notes for Key to Life: “Teaches someone to become a literate Scientologist ... .”. Whereas the 1991 Grade Chart lists for the Primary Rundown: “PRD”:  “A superliterate, ...”. The Key to Life by the way has not ever been referred to or has been associated with some superliterate, that is until then.

May be a line can be drawn between HCOB 15 Apr 90 I “Conceptual Thinking” (confidential) and HCOB 13 Oct 79 “Conceptual Understanding”. They appear all to have been written in the same time span, although I can only guess what the confidential issue says. A difference still is that the KTL does not aim to to get conceptual about study technology itself, whereas the Primary Rundown specifically does!

A reminder:

“Our technology has not been discovered by a group. True, if the group had not supported me in many ways, I could not have discovered it either. But it remains that if in its formative stages it was not discovered by a group, then group efforts, one can only assume, will not add to it or successfully alter it in the future. I can only say this now that it is done. There remains, of course, group tabulation or coordination of what has been done, which will be valuable—only so long as it does not seek to alter basic principles and successful applications.”         LRH

It is a high crime to omit this vital step.

When on or after OT III, such persons must now do the Primary Rundown before any continuance of study. It now becomes Mandatory.”          LRH

(from HCOB 13 Aug 72R* “Fast Flow Training”)

“Over the past year I have done considerable research, observation, pilots and more research on the subject of making successful students.

We have of course excellent study technology which is far in advance of anything Man has had. It has been developed over a period of 22 years.

Sometimes the student is very slow.

Sometimes he ends off study due to non application.

Sometimes the study tech is not used. When this happens of course the tech ‘didn't work’ because it was not used.

I have run enough pilots now in order to handle this.

PILOTS

There were several pilot Courses to find this material.

The one which finally proved it was a Course of about 12 students.

They were very slow. They were unable to apply the materials during an apprenticeship.

It was then found none of them had done an honest Primary Rundown. They had ‘know bested’ their way through it, cheating, and had falsely attested.

Then further investigation showed each one of them had come to the Course with his Ethics badly out.

A Confessional was then done on each of them and they were restarted to again do a full Primary Rundown, Student Hat and the materials.

Only then did they succeed in their application of what was studied.

This was also true of their Supervisors, each one of whom had done his Supervisor's Course with his Ethics out. So one should not blame the students only!”          LRH
(from HCOB 15 Nov 72 II “Students Who Succeed”)

“A chronological study of materials is necessary for the complete training of a truly top grade expert in these lines. He can see how the subject progressed and so is able to see which are the highest levels of development. Not the least advantage in this is the defining of words and terms, for each, when originally used, was defined, in most cases, with considerable exactitude, and one is not left with any misunderstoods. It is for this reason that the Saint Hill Briefing Course checksheet should consist only of the chronological materials, studied in chronological order, excepting only the Study Tapes (Primary Rundown) which should be done first if not previously done properly.”          LRH

Back to Main Index Various arguments...

Go back Primary Rundown only in use during 1972-86?

According to my knowledge it is not being delivered as a service anywhere at present. I know for a fact that it was still given in September 1979 according to an used checksheet of the course that surfaced. It is offered as a service still in the periodical ‘Ability 346’, (ca Feb 81). We find it listed as an available service at the Flag Land Base (Clearwater, Fl) according to a donation price list from March-June 1982. It is listed on there as ‘Student Hat (Primary Rundown Version) $1,510.00’. Also we find it listed in ‘The Auditor 186 (US Edition)’, Apr 83, its insert lists pricings for services for respectively April-May-June 1983 that does include the Primary Rundown. Although therewith it has not been confirmed that one also still could take this service, available on a list and actual delivery appear is not always the same. Then we find it on the donation lists for August 1985 and August 1986, also the PRD Glossary booklet was also still offered for sale during 1985-86. A last notice of it being offered as a service is found in donation lists dating to early 1989.
According to a variety of persons that have contacted me, it would appear that the Primary Rundown was available as an actual service, and delivered to those persons that wished to commence on it, at least until 1986, but only at some places. Although as the years passed by less and less attention was given to promote the service to the public through magazines or other means. I recall that during the 2nd half of the ’80s this service was something that was rumoured about by the staff at the Flag Land Base (Clearwater, Fl). It may have been available as a service, but I did not really get that impression this due to the way staff talked about it, as if it was something that belonged to the past. If it was available at the Flag Land Base at that time I would not have expected staff to talk about it in the way they did.

The Grade Charts from 1990 and 1991 still had a small notice as if being an available service. A donation list from November 1991 does list the Primary Rundown, not as a readily available service but as “To be announced”. The next Grade Chart was issued in 1995 which by then had added the little notice “(when released)”. Scientology parishioners will have been told that it was under review (something) and that it would be released later, but till this day it is still not available as a service that the public could enroll on.

I stumbled over one location where the Primary Rundown was being offered as if it was available as an actual service, but it rather puzzled me. I am unsure if it was really offered for service or that it simply had been included even if it may not have been available as an actual service. The Internet page where I found this gave the copyright 1996-2004. It appeared to be a French website (scientologie.tm.fr), although it contained various pages in the English language. I've attempted to contact them several times as per the email address they provided for, but I never received a response. The location of the webpage was http://www.scientologie.tm.fr/wis/wiseng/40/40-study.htm. Since at least 2011 the page had been taken down. On 15 Oct 2007 it appeared as follows, see here (pop-up window).

In spite of this though, I do have it verified and confirmed that at least one person was actually receiving this service at the Flag Service Organization (FSO) in Clearwater, Fl, this during the years 2011-12. You see, this person, a high profile public, she persistently nudged and insisted that it be available according to the Primary Rundown referencing as found in the latest release of ‘The Technical Bulletins of Dianetics and Scientology’ volumes (1991). However in order to be able to deliver it, it appears this FSO had then to compile the materials especially for this person as it apparently was not readily available, and this was done. So there you go, it seem it can be done!

This general unavailability however counters the many announcements at Scientology meetings by Mr. David Miscavige as if all tech is available and this publicly for all. The public is repeatedly Appeased with: “All arbitraries are cancelled!”  In my experience if some person or group persuades you not to do a certain service when this once flamboyantly had been recommended by its founder, then this would justify some consideration in regards to that efforts are made to make it easily and readily available. One then ought to sit down for a bit and think over for a while why this is not being the case?

Go back Gradually filtering out the Primary Rundown till it was gone? vs A future prospective?

Could it be so that one has attempted to gradually filter out the Rundown to a point that it was totally gone? First you would in a subtle manner alter the definition and prerequisites of Fast Flow Training, then you focus on Method One Word Clearing* & Student Hat (just get the attention off the PRD!, whoever needs the PRD?), and then let slip through various other arbitraries such as: “We are in the process of updating it, it's really going to be GREAT when it will be released!”. An interesting arbitrary is also the KTL and LOC consideration. It's like having someone saying: “Well guys, we don't need the Primary Rundown anymore, now we have the Key to Life!”.
It would appear that the Primary Rundown is considered a life changing action by those who have done it. Malin Gelfan, an original LRH trained Class XII auditor, has said that after doing that action she didn't read texts horizontally (line for line) anymore, no, it was like going over them vertically. The stories from persons I have been in communication with about the KTL are much less impressive, various persons said that they expected it to be more. The bottom line here is that I have not met a single person that said that the Primary Rundown was of minor consequence, whereas the KTL has been frequently questioned.

A Sea Org member whom I had known for a rather long time confided to me in early 2005 that International Management was working on compiling a new version of the Primary Rundown to be released possibly in the near future. He was unable to be more exact about the timing or give any further specifics, but he got accelerated solely by the idea doing this great new version. At present there is no additional news about this.
One may ask how difficult a task this new version actually would be to compile? After all the Primary Rundown is compiled from the Student Hat materials, if you have these material fully sorted out all you got to do is compile extract the word lists from these, that's it!

Go back Release of Key to Life another setback prior to enrollment on the Primary Rundown?

So, we were thus already facing an unavailability of the Primary Rundown. Now with the release of the Key to Life and Life Orientation Course it is pushed even more into the background, because HCOB 24 Apr 91“Modification of the Primary Rundown” list them as prerequisites for the Primary Rundown. So, you first have to enroll on these courses, and only then you will be eligible for the Primary Rundown.

“The Hubbard Key to Life Course is a mandatory prerequisite to the Primary Rundown, ... .

The Hubbard Life Orientation Course is a mandatory prerequisite to the Primary Rundown, ... .”

An obstacle that it herewith presents is of a financial nature, as rather exuberant prices (donations) are being asked for these 2 services. At its introduction in May 1990 the KTL and LOC did cost respectively $7,000 (+$1,000 for materials) and $3,000 (+ $500 for materials), did make a total of $11,500 (this included already the IAS* 20% discount).
Then since at least November 1991 the materials were included in the price of the course making it a total of $10,000 for both courses including the materials. If both purchased for at the same time the total price for both was set at $9,000.
You were by the way not allowed to buy the materials separately from the course, which is probably why it later got to be offered as a package price only (course + materials). I have a record that in 2003 the whole package price (KTL & LOC) was set at $11,500 again. What I recall is that the KTL would take you 2-3 weeks to complete. The LOC just 1 week. This is quite an amount of money for just one person doing these courses, which could easily be started and finished within just 1 month. Imagine you will do this course of action with you family, your wife and may be 2 children. I will cost you.

This was again quite a setback for persons that had been waiting to finally be able to enroll on this mysterious and rumoured Primary Rundown. If only that was true... because the service was still not waiting for you even if you had attested for the Key to Life and Life Orientation Course.

Go back Method One Word Clearing replacing the Primary Rundown?

If you replace the text

“So that there is NO question about what is meant by FAST FLOW TRAINING: ANY STUDENT WHO HONESTLY COMPLETES THE PRIMARY RUNDOWN OR PRIMARY CORRECTION RUNDOWN IS THEREAFTER DESIGNATED A ‘FAST FLOW STUDENT’.” (from HCOB 13 Aug 72R “Fast Flow Training”)

with

“So that there is NO question about what is meant by FAST FLOW TRAINING: ANY STUDENT WHO HONESTLY COMPLETES THE STUDENT HAT AND METHOD ONE WORD CLEARING OR THE PRIMARY RUNDOWN OR PRIMARY CORRCTION RUNDOWN IS THEREAFTER DESIGNATED A ‘FAST FLOW STUDENT’.” (from HCOB 13 Aug 72RA (Revised 30 Aug 83) “Fast Flow Training”)

it may make some people wonder if there has been some intent or at least some thought to replace the Primary Rundown with the simplistic Method One Word Clearing. They are both sort of placed here on the same level.

The book ‘What Is Scientology?’ (1978 edition) on page 49 tells us the following:

“Method One Word Clearing handles study difficulties due to earlier misunderstood words in subjects studied previously.
To fully handle study difficulties, the Primary Rundown should be done. A person who has done this course can read comfortably and instantly translate word data into concepts and so can study accurately and swiftly and can then do the actions. It is advised that this course be done at the student's earliest opportunity and prior to commencing on auditor training courses where possible, especially if the student has any amount of difficulty with study. Method One Word Clearing is a prerequisite to the Primary Rundown.”

These are obviously different actions that have different values and have different importances attached to them.

Go back Primary Rundown replaced by ‘Golden Age of Tech’ Standard Study Tech Drills?

Study Tech Drills (GAT)The big difference between the KTL and the Primary Rundown is the part about study technology. The Primary Rundown was about the subject of study itself, where the KTL never was. Or may there have been the idea to have the Primary Rundown replaced by the excessive drilling as was introduced in 1995 with the Standard Study Tech Drills? See Study Tech Part 1 & 2 drills packs, here on this church promo illustration placed next to The ‘New’ Student Hat Course pack.

“As part of our Golden Age of Technical training breakthrough, drills have been released for the entire body of Study Technology! Every aspect has been broken down into drills, drills, drills – all to boost you up into the strata of 100% perfect application.”
(from promo Golden Age of Tech, publication copyrighted 1996)

This way however it is achieved rather by habit than through understanding and concepts, and these are just not what the Primary Rundown was about.

You know, people who do not understand and can not duplicate, now they can be ruled and mislead so easily. So, why are we not having this Primary Rundown in use since so many years? These last years we have the proclamation of David Miscavige that “all arbitraries are cancelled”. Well, we HAVE arbitraries, and the one regarding the Primary Rundown is particularly a bothering one!

Go back What are we going to consider being a ‘Fast Flow Student’?

Are we going to follow this:

PREREQUISITES

Primary Rundown or Primary Correction Rundown are required for Levels 0 to IV or above and for FEBC. They are not required for HSDC or the many other courses below these levels.”          LRH
(from HCOB 13 Aug 72R (Corr. and Reiss. 15 Aug 72 “Fast Flow Training”)

Or this:

PREREQUISITES

The Student Hat and Method One Word Clearing or the Primary Rundown or the Primary Correction Rundown are required for the student to fast flow his courses.

Note: Method One Word Clearing is a prerequisite for Academy Levels 0-IV, OEC* and higher-level tech and admin training.”
(from HCOB 13 Aug 72RA (Revised 30 Aug 83) “Fast Flow Training”)

Go back David Miscavige and the Primary Rundown

The periodical ‘The Auditor 87 (UK Edition)’, [ca May 73] printed a success story of a 12-year old David Miscavige:

“David Miscavige, Fast Flow Student. Willingboro, New Jersey.
‘I did the Primary Rundown in November of 1972. Since then I've done the HSDC and Internship and the Academy Levels 0-IV. While doing these, there was a big change in my study. I was able to study 100% faster and understand the data 100% better. While on the Dianetic Internship I really saw that I could APPLY the data EASILY.
Now while on the 0-IV Internship I also see that the data is easily applied and really works. Also it is a big win for me as I can see age makes no difference in study as I am only 12 years old’.”

This David Miscavige later turned to be Chairman of the board, Religious Technology Center (RTC). Since 1982 and till this day he he basically runs the Church of Scientology. To judge from his success story he appears quite pleased with having done this course of action and he does list its advantages. Nonetheless at around the time he became to be the leading figure in the church, the Primary Rundown has also dropped out of use. Despite a continuous promises of a forthcoming re-release, till this day no Primary Rundown is available for use!

I would dare to confidently state here that if Mr. Miscavige would want to have the Primary Rundown easily available as a service, that today we would have it easily available as a service!

When talking about arbitraries, isn't the disappearance of the Primary Rundown not an arbitrary of significance?

Back to Main Index Summary and where is L. Ron Hubbard?

We did see how very easy something useful can be thrown in some corner and (almost) forgotten about. In regards to the Primary Rundown is it by accident or intentionally?

How do you go from:

“So that there is NO question about what is meant by FAST FLOW TRAINING:

ANY STUDENT WHO HONESTLY COMPLETES THE PRIMARY RUNDOWN OR PRIMARY CORRECTION RUNDOWN IS THEREAFTER DESIGNATED AFAST FLOW STUDENT’”          LRH
(from HCOB 13 Aug 72R (Corr. and Reiss. 15 Aug 72) “Fast Flow Training”)

And:

“The Primary Rundown, developed by L. Ron Hubbard, is THE breakthrough to end all breakthroughs in the field of study and education.”
(from ‘The Auditor 87 (UK Edition)’ [ca may 73])

To:

SUSPENDS any HCOB, HCO PL, BTB* or BPL* requiring twin training or checkouts*, preventing Supervisor checkouts or requiring PRD as a prerequisite for courses.”          LRH  (false signature!)
(from HCO PL 31 Aug 74 II “Fast Flow Training Reinstated)

[cancelled by BPL 18 Oct 76 “Successful Training Lineup” that states that it “was written for LRH and not by him.”]

And:

“The only prerequisite for a student, staff or public, to be able to Fast Flow his courses is Student Hat and Method 1 Word Clearing. Where a student has already done the full Primary Rundown, he is also qualified to Fast Flow his courses.”
(from BPL 18 Oct 76 “Successful Training Lineup”)

[it cancelled HCO PL 31 Aug 74 II “Fast Flow Training Reinstated” but maintained that which the falsely to L. Ron Hubbard attributed reference introduced!]

And:

“The only prerequisite for a student, staff or public to be able to fast flow his courses is Student Hat and Method One Word Clearing. Where a student has already done the full Primary Rundown, he is also qualified to fast flow his courses.”          LRH  (false signature!)
(from HCO PL 25 Sept 79 I “Successful Training Lineup”)

[cancelled by HCO PL 25 Sept 79 I “Successful Training Lineup, Cancelled 30 August 1983” that states “This issue, written by another, is hereby cancelled.”, David Mayo involvement]

And:

“So that there is NO question about what is meant by FAST FLOW TRAINING:

ANY STUDENT WHO HONESTLY COMPLETES THE STUDENT HAT AND METHOD ONE WORD CLEARING OR THE PRIMARY RUNDOWN OR PRIMARY CORRECTION RUNDOWN IS THEREAFTER DESIGNATED AFAST FLOW STUDENT’.”          LRH  (?)

( from HCOB 13 Aug 72RA (Revised 30 Aug 83) “Fast Flow Training”)

[the text indicated in italics has been added in this revision of the HCOB!]

Attributed to have been written by L. Ron Hubbard, but can we trust that he really instructed this revision considering the above track of references and the things they say?

The question that may surface here is where is L. Ron Hubbard in all this? He was not directly involved in the change of what was considered a Fast Flow student back in 1974. His authorship for HCO PL 31 Aug 74 II “Fast Flow Training Reinstated” and HCO PL 25 Sept 79 I “Successful Training Lineup” have been officially denounced. He also did not effectively counteract that change in later years, although the Primary Rundown references were not adjusted earlier than 1983 to reflect the no-requirement of the Primary Rundown. It is in particular this that one probably should be worrying about.

When we go over the findings, then what is left of the position taken that L. Ron Hubbard was still fully in control of things? Other persons than L. Ron Hubbard have been publishing references that downgraded and invalidated the use of the Primary Rundown. Two of these references even carried a false LRH signature! Hubbard, in spite of having that acknowledged the information that downgraded the Primary Rundown continued to in use and was passed over to a variety of other references. We are obviously dealing here with a very sloppy L. Ron Hubbard to say it gently!
I received the following response to my Primary Rundown analysis: “I again read it and it is a most confused history. However whether LRH was still alive and acting or not, if he was, he certainly was not spending his time in course rooms, and he certainly hoped that others took good care of it. The apparatus had grown so large that I easily can conceive of high-ranking people that tried to ‘solve problems’ by introducing arbitraries in the guise of alleged ‘HCO PLs’.”

Back to Main Index Chronological Primary Rundown reference list by L. Ron Hubbard

“A chronological study of materials is necessary for the complete training of a truly top grade expert in these lines. He can see how the subject progressed and so is able to see which are the highest levels of development. Not the least advantage in this is the defining of words and terms, for each, when originally used, was defined, in most cases, with considerable exactitude, and one is not left with any misunderstoods.”          LRH
(from HCOB 30 Jul 73 “Scientology, Current State of the Subject and Materials”)

An notice has to be made in regards to HCOB 30 Mar 72 “Primary Correction Rd, First Cramming Correction” and HCOB 4 Apr 72 “Tech Div Primary Rundown”. Both of these references were released again on 30 May 1972 with the notification that they were ‘Revised’. The original versions however are therewith not necessarily being cancelled. When both the versions are compared we can see that they are rather different. They seem to complement each other rather than replacing one another. They related about a development. Both versions are presented in ‘The Organization Executive Course’ volumes (1970-74 release) but the originals are skipped in the 1991 release of these same volumes.

Considering:

“This idea that the ‘old’ is always cancelled by anything ‘new’ has its root in the idea that a later order cancels earlier orders, which is true. But orders are one thing and Tech basics another.”          LRH

Back to Main Index Afterword

This study about the history of the Primary Rundown was originally published in 2005. Now it has been completely overhauled and updated. It reveals about a downgrade of the criteria for that what is called Fast Flow Training. Its direct result was an invalidation of the Primary Rundown which since has turned to lost tech. We have not one, no, we have two references that were published over the head of L. Ron Hubbard, that, each of them, later were officially cancelled because L. Ron Hubbard had not actually written them. Nonetheless, that which was introduced and promoted by these (now cancelled) references was, amazingly enough, fully upheld by the references that were replacing them! In addition to this we have an array of BPLs that claimed “Revised by L. Ron Hubbard” and “Approved by L. Ron Hubbard”, which involvement also were denounced. You may here seriously start to wonder what has been going on here and ask yourself, “Where is L. Ron Hubbard?”

Now, consider that if these things could happen during the years 1974-83 then what are we to think of the complete turnaround of the Bridge that was actualized during 1978-82?

Vocabulary:

..R, ..RA, ..RB (etc) or #R, #RA (etc):
For example: ‘HCO PL 24 Sept 70R’ & ‘HCO PL 24 Sept 70RA, etc. The given date denotes the first time it has been published in issue-form. The R, RA indication may also follow after an issue-number. The R stands for ‘Revision’ and would refer to that it has been revised since it was first published. If it is revised a 2nd time it is indicated as RA, a 3rd time RB, then RC, and so on.
     audit, auditing, auditor:
The application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor (listener). The goal of the auditor is to make the receiver of the auditing look at incidents and reduce the mental charge which may lay upon them. The auditor may not evaluate and has to adhere to the Auditor's code.
     BPL:
Board Policy Letter’. Color flash–green ink on cream paper. These are the issues of the Boards of Directors of the Churches of Scientology and are separate and distinct from HCO Policy Letters written by LRH. Only LRH issues may be printed green on white for policy and only LRH issues may have the prefix HCO. These Board issues are valid as Policy. (BPL 14 Jan 74R I, New Issues).
This issue-type was established in January 1974. In October 1975 a project was started to cancel HCO PLs not written by L. Ron Hubbard and if still found being of value having them reissued as BPLs. By 1980 all BPLs had been revoked.
     BTB:
Board Technical Bulletin’. Color flash–red ink on cream paper. These are the issues of the Boards of Directors of the Churches of Scientology and are separate and distinct from HCO Bulletins written by LRH. Only LRH issues may be printed green on white for Technical Bulletins and only LRH issues may have the prefix HCO. These Board issues are valid as tech. (BPL 14 Jan 74R I, New Issues).
This issue-type was established in January 1974. In December 1974 a project was started to cancel HCOBs not written by L. Ron Hubbard and if still found being of value having them reissued as BTBs. By 1980 all BTBs had been revoked.
     checkout:
The action of verifying a student's knowledge of something. This includes understanding of the words in a text, and being able to apply and demonstrate it.
     floating needle (F/N):
The idle uninfluenced movement of the needle on the dial (of an E-meter) without any patterns or reactions in it. It can be as small as one inch or as large as dial wide. It does not fall or drop to the right of the dial. It moves to the left at the same speed as it moves to the right. It is observed on a Mark V E-meter calibrated with the TA (Tone Arm) between 2.0 and 3.0 with GIs (Good Indicators) in on the pc. It can occur after a cognition, blowdown of the TA (Tone Arm) or just moves into floating. The pc may or may not voice the cognition. (HCOB 7 May 69 V)
     FEBC:
Flag Executive Briefing Course’. Consists of high level administration technology.
     FPRD:
False Purpose Rundown’. A specific auditing action aiming at disclosing hidden ‘false purposes’ of which the person him or herself is not aware of, but is undermining this person's own survival in various ways. The FPRD is basically an extension of Expanded Dianetics.
     F/N:
floating needle’. See at that entry in vocabulary.
     HCOB:
Hubbard Communications Office Bulletin’. Color flash–red ink on white paper. Written by LRH only , but only so starting from January 1974. These are the technical issue line. All data for auditing and courses is contained in HCOBs. For more information go here (separate window).
    HCO PL:
Hubbard Communication Office Policy Letter’. Color flash–green ink on white paper. Written by LRH only, but only so starting from January 1974. These are the organizational and administrative issue line. For more information go here (separate window).
     HSDC:

     IAS:
International Association of Scientologists’. A Scientology membership granting amongst other 20% discounts and other financial advantages.
     LRH:
An usual abbreviation for ‘L. Ron Hubbard’.
     LRH ED:
L. Ron Hubbard Executive Directive’. Earlier called SEC EDs (Secretarial EDs). These are issued by LRH to various areas. They are not valid longer than one year if fully complied with when they are automatically retired. They otherwise remain valid until fully complied with or until amended or cancelled by another LRH ED. They carry current line, projects, programs, immediate orders and directions. They are numbered for area and sequence for the area and are sent to staffs or specific posts in orgs. They are blue ink on white paper with a special heading. (HCO PL 24 Sept 70R)
     Method One Word Clearing:
1. by meter in session. A full assessment of many, many subjects is done. The auditor then takes each reading subject and clears the chain back to earlier words and or words in earlier subjects until he gets an F/N*. 2. assess, take the reading items from the best read on down and with E/S (earlier similar) pull each one to F/N. Get each word you find to F/N. There can be many F/Ns per subject. End off with a win on the subject. 3. the action taken to clean up all misunderstoods in every subject one has studied. It is done by a word clearing auditor. The result of a properly done Method One word clearing is the recovery of one's education. Abbr. M1.

This is a series of books that contain the HCO PLs, and any references that are primarily dealing with administrative matters. They are divided up division wise. The HCO PLs are printed in green ink on white paper, and the volumes themselves come in green bindings. These books may also be referred to as the ‘green volumes’ or even ‘OEC volumes’. The ‘old green volumes’ then would refer to the 1970-74 release, the ‘new green volumes’ instead to the 1991 release. See a listing of published volumes here (pop-up window).
     original mimeo print-off:
Individually printed issues and distributed from the Mimeo Section of the Scientology organization as opposed to those collected in volumes. These are the issues that you may regard as the real first prints. As a rule these are typed out, mimeographed and distributed as soon as possible after having been compiled or written. They are always legal-sized, 8½ by 14 inches (approx. 21,6 x 35,6 cm). If the issue had 3 or more sides, the pages were collated and stapled together in the upper left corner. More detailed information about this is found here (separate window).
     Rundown:
A series of steps which are auditing actions and processes designed to handle a specific aspect of a case and which have a known end phenomena. Example: Introspection Rundown. (LRH Def. Notes)  As a rule this mostly works as a corrective action and not as a mandatory part of the Bridge.
     Sea Org (SO):

The HCOBs are printed in red ink on white paper, and the volumes themselves come in red bindings. The references are arranged in chronological release order (per issue date). These books may also be referred to as the ‘red volumes’. The ‘old red volumes’ then would refer to the 1976-80 release, the ‘new red volumes’ instead to the 1991 release. See a listing of published volumes here (pop-up window).
     TR:
training regimen or routine’. See at ‘training routine’ in vocabulary.
     training routine (TR):
Training regimen or routine. Often referred to as a training drill. TRs are a precise training action putting a student through laid out practical steps gradient by gradient, to teach a student to apply with certainty what he has learned.
