An introduction to the Herald of the Star
The Herald of the Star was the first and the leading magazine of the organization The Order of the Star in the East. This organization was founded to carry the message of the coming World Teacher, to organize and to inform those who wanted to be part of the preparation of His coming. In the December number of 1927 of the Herald (the very last issue) a flashback was given on the developments that took place and the ideas that were formed during the existence of this magazine. The article gives an overview worth reading: “Ring out the old, ring in the new” (1927, Dec 1st, #12, pp. 446/455).
A variety of countries had in addition to the Herald of the Star also a local magazine. These were in fact available in many different countries and languages. They may have contained translations of some of the articles and such as they appeared in the Herald of the Star, but they also kept the members in these countries informed about the local activities and progress in their local area, and also to coordinate future activities.
These inputs from the hand of Krishnamurti in the Herald of the Star –Editorial Notes, articles, poems, discourses– are generally only known by a very few. The old magazines these days are rather hard to find. Once back in 1924 an attempt was made to assemble these Editorial Notes and various discourses by Krishnamurti as found in the Herald were published in a little book entitled ‘Editorial Notes’. But also this publication is almost impossible to find, and that publication does not always convey the complete Editorial Notes exactly as they had appeared in the Herald of the Star.
They present early wanderings of his mind. There is a simplicity about them. This dates from a time in where he was still finding his own way. A time in where there was no demand yet to give full discourses. A sort of a prologue of what was going to come.
The unavailability is the reason why an effort is made to make these available on this website. It is a phase which shed some light on his development and thus should not be withheld from people. What he said and wrote back then, he expressed differently later on. In essence the struggle always has been the same, but a much different way of relaying this to his listeners and readers. The Editorial Notes are important also because we are introduced to an ‘observing’ Krishnaji. And we learn what he said during these very first Star Conventions in Paris (1921), Vienna (1923) and Arnhem (1924), but also the speeches given during the first Star Camps at Ommen (1924/27), various early speeches given at other places, and we hear him talking about his decision to also have Star Camps at Ojai (1928).
During 1927 various started to realize that Krishnamurti was not going to fulfil the expectancy. Then in 1929 it was all over with The Order of the Star in the East, he dissolved the organization in August that year with a speech leaving no doubt about his future intentions. He was therewith breaking away from his shackles and went his own way from there on out.
